Matamoros is a Mexican city only 25 short miles away from South Padre. This can definately add a bit of Mexican flavor to your trip to South Padre. This quaint Mexican town has many attractions and events to keep you interested and entertained. There is a museum called The Casamata Museum. It is the largest remaining of the large forts built in the 1800's. The fortress was built in 1845. It was attacked in 1846 by Zachary Taylor. It is free to attend a tour of the museum. It is a wonderful place to visit.

There is a beautiful old colonial style home built in 1885. It is known as La Casa Cross. It is definately one of the most unique in all of Northern Mexico. There are many stories that go along with these house.

There is also a theater known as the Reforma Theater. It is known as "The Athens of Tamaulipas". It was raised in 1861. The theater was torn down in 1965 and replaced with a more modern looking theater. It served as a movie theater for a number of years and then refined back to it's original state.
